Lyn Slater

 

 

Lyn Slater, LMSW, Ph.D., is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Social Services and an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law. She teaches and developed two courses on child abuse and neglect; one with a focus on evidence-based assessment and intervention and the other with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration. She has also taught Social Justice: Practice with Organizations and Communities and Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups. Professor Slater coordinates the Social Work and the Law specialization in the Graduate School of Social Services. Dr. Slater received an M.A. in Criminal Justice from SUNY Albany, an M.S.W. from Hunter College and a doctoral degree in Social Welfare from CUNY Graduate School and University Center. She is also the Supervising Social Worker at the School of Law’s Family Advocacy Clinic, where interdisciplinary teams of law and social work students provide preventive interventions and legal assistance to families that have children with special needs. Dr. Slater’s research interests are; interprofessional family centered care, child abuse prevention, inter-professional education and practice, program evaluation and the differential impact of social policies and laws on individual clients and communities. 

 

 

Before coming to Fordham, Dr. Slater was the Director of the Child Sexual Abuse Project at Lawyers for Children, one of the first legal organizations to use an interdisciplinary approach in the representation of children. In that role she was qualified by New York City Family Courts as an expert in child abuse with a specialty in child sexual abuse, worked with a number of organizations in the development of the first Child Advocacy Centers in New York City, developed an intervention and resource handbook for Family Court Judges for cases involving sexual abuse, researched, wrote and implemented a psycho-education intervention for children, parents, foster parents and foster care workers that addressed sexual abuse and was active in local and national interdisciplinary training efforts. She was a past President of the New York City Chapter of APSAC (American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children), a member of the APSAC Task Force on the Development of Standards for Attorneys Representing Children and has presented at numerous conferences on the challenges and rewards related to inter-professional collaboration in child welfare settings.  Prior to coming to Lawyers for Children, Lyn worked for fifteen years in residential treatment settings for abused and neglected adolescents and children in supervisory and administrative positions. As a consultant and trainer in child welfare her area of expertise was the professional development and retention of line child care workers and the development of collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork with the goal of facilitating more effective agency conferencing and treatment plan development.
